Our Story

From a Mustard Seed
to an Oak Tree

The story of Daily-Need Group can be compared with a mustard seed that germinates and grows to become an OAK tree. It all started as Daily-Need Chemist through the dream of Otunba (Dr.) Matthew Oyin Jolayemi, OFR in 1970, at 134, Nnamdi Azikiwe Street on Lagos Island.

After two years of trading, manufacturing of cosmetics started in Surulere and the first product — PAULINA BEAUTY CREAM — was manufactured on the 19th November 1972, whilst pharmaceuticals were added the following year with the production of Penicillin Ointment.

The Organisation made a giant stride in 1974 by moving into its factory on Plot 10, Unity Close, Off Ladipo Street, Matori — which it still occupies today. That same year, Daily-Need Toothpaste was launched into the market for the first time.

On 29th June 2007, the administrative Head Office moved to its modern edifice. Today, Daily-Need Group is a market-driven organisation sensitive to the yearnings of the ordinary Nigerian, with a solid foundation for future growth and a vision to be one of the best three in the industry.

About the Chairman

Otunba (Dr.) M. Oyin Jolayemi, OFR

Daily Need Group
Honorary Doctorate
Business Administration
Kensington University, USA — 1991

Otunba (Dr.) M. Oyin Jolayemi is a very successful industrialist with over three decades of business experience. He is well informed of the intricacies of business and finance and has since 1972 made substantial investments in manufacturing. Widely respected in the business and financial world, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Business Administration by Kensington University (USA) in 1991. He has travelled far and wide across the world including Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, the U.S.A., the Middle East, and the Far East which has greatly broadened his exposure in Industrial Management.

The foundation of this global perspective was laid in 1953 when a 13-year-old Jolayemi arrived in Lagos. Armed with nothing but a relentless drive to break the cycle of poverty, he displayed the "uncommon zeal" that would later define his career. He balanced his early entrepreneurial efforts with education, eventually transitioning from a petty trader to a patent medicine dealer at Idumota. This pivotal shift led to the 1970 opening of Daily-Need Chemist, the "mustard seed" that would eventually germinate into the multi-billion naira indigenous conglomerate known today as the Daily-Need Group.

Beyond the boardroom, the name Oyin Jolayemi has become a permanent fixture in the Nigerian landscape, most notably immortalized by the major thoroughfare in Victoria Island that bears his name. This street, which hosts the headquarters of some of the nation’s largest corporate organizations, serves as a physical testament to a man who rose from an apprentice to an industrial icon. Today, the Daily-Need Group’s diverse portfolio ranging from the household favorite De-Deon’s syrup to various pharmaceutical and personal care brands continues to reflect Otunba Jolayemi’s commitment to quality and his lifelong mission to provide restorative health solutions to families across the continent.

Managing Director's Message

"

We are driven by the desire to be the best. Being the best does not necessarily mean the biggest — our target is to always put our best foot forward to prove to the world that Nigerians have what it takes to achieve what is seemingly alien to Africa.

Daily Need Group

The establishment of the company was premised on the need to impact positively on the society, through the manufacturing and marketing of essential daily pharmaceutical and household products, required to sustain a healthy and vibrant society. We are therefore propelled by the vision of our founder — to rank among the league of world-class pharmaceutical companies through the production of premium pharmaceutical brands and a manufacturing process that satisfies global best practices.

We have been a major player in the Nigerian economy for over four decades. From a small enterprise in 1970, the Daily-Need Group has grown into a large-scale company ranking among the top pharmaceutical names in Africa. From Penicillin Ointment — our first product in 1970 — we have now extended to over 20 product categories.

The successful completion of our Multi-Billion Naira Factory — designed to NAFDAC, WHO & USFDA cGMP standards — represents a major leap towards the realisation of our dream. We are now positioned for the best manufacturing practices and Quality Standards comparable to anywhere in the world.

Aside from Daily-Need Industries, which essentially manufactures pharmaceutical products, we also have two associated companies: DNI Personal Products Ltd, which makes the Daily-Need Toothpaste and other personal products, and Oyin Industries Ltd, manufacturers of the Suppy Beef & Chicken Seasoning.

We are continually evolving. We lay emphasis on our manpower as our best resource. Our Board and Management consistently put the emotions and wellbeing of our staff and stakeholders as top priority — and we are proud to say that our Management and Staff are wholly Nigerian.

Whatever we have been able to achieve up till now is not in isolation of the Grace that is bestowed upon us as a company that has chosen to stand up for Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
